The history of the port

Ajaccio, as already mentioned, is located on the west coast of Corsica. Its name derives from the Greek “Agation” and means “good port”, testifying that the Greeks lived in the area already many centuries ago. After the Greeks, Ajaccio knew the dominations of the ancient Romans, the Vandals, the Lombards and the Pisan Republic.

In the centuries, it gained importance under the Genoese domination, during which, in the sixteenth century, fortifications were built for the defence of the territory (like the famous towers). This aroused the interest of France, which failed in an attempt to conquer it, reinforcing even more the power of the Genoese.

In the eighteenth century, the power passed into the hands of Pasquale Paoli, but after a while France succeeded in its intent to conquer and gained power immediately after the Treaty of Versailles.
