The history of the port
Livorno, originally, was a small fishing village formed in a bay not far from the mouth of the river Arno. The birth of its port is due to the silting of the Pisan port, the only opening on the sea of the Pisan Republic. The silting forced the Pisans to seek another outlet in order to continue with their maritime trades.
Around the 14th century, the Pisans built walls around the city. The new port also aroused the interest of the Genoese and Florentines, who succeeded in monopolise.
The real birth of the port of Livorno, in fact, coincides with the dominion of the Medici, who managed to turn it into one of the widest of the Mediterranean. The old fortress, around which the city of Livorno expands, is the symbol of the port and the city itself.
