The history of the port
Formerly known as Falesia, the origins of the port of Piombino arrive until the 5th century. The port, in fact, has been employed since the Etruscan times, which used it to get the iron coming from the island of Elba and to distribute the finished products throughout the Mediterranean.
In the nineteenth century, with the allocation of two centers for the processing of iron, the port acquired a great importance regarding the trade, so that between 1887 and 1908 the maritime trades were duplicated.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, they began to realize works that transformed Piombino into a real modern port. The commercial trade, therefore, joined the passenger traffic, especially with the island of Elba, for which Piombino represented the only connection with the mainland.
