The polyphonic songs are one of the oldest and most fascinating traditions of Corsica. A tradition recovered especially in recent years thanks to the work of associations and artists. And an opportunity to discover them is the 2015 edition of Rencontres de Chants Polyphoniques, event that will take place in Calvi from September 15 to 19.
It all began in 1989 as a simple idea of few enthusiasts: two bands met in that occasion, one of them was Corsican. Since then, there have been meetings every year, involving groups from all over the world and always with the same spirit: to give voice to those communities and minorities that have no voice.
Today, when it’s been 36 years, Rencontres de chants polyphoniques represent one of the most important musical and cultural events on the island. During this five-days event, polyphonic groups from all over the world will perform: Tibetan, South African, Cuban, Sardinian.
Moreover, music workshops are organized, places where all participants can increase their knowledge of Corsican polyphonic songs and not only. The different events, usually, take place in the Cathedral of Saint Jean-Baptiste, in the oratory of Saint-Antoine and in Place d’Armes.
